It would be wise not to put the pedal to the metal in the city of Petal.

Police Chief Lee Shelbourn says he’s been told to double the number of traffic citations and to set up more roadblocks to help shore up a budget shortfall in the south Mississippi city.

Shelbourn would not say who told him take the steps.

He said his department did as they were told, but he doesn’t plan any more roadblocks because the “police department is not supposed to be a moneymaking organization.”
