A Hancock County Deputy died during an off duty motorcycle accident on Saturday.

Cpl. Johnny Poulos, public information officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said that the accident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. on Kiln Picayune Road. Timothy Campbell Sr., 45, of Carriere was riding his 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle west bound on the road when for an unknown reason he left the road. Campbell was thrown from the motorcycle during the accident and died on scene, Poulos said.

Hancock County Coroner Norma Stiglet said Campbell’s cause of death was due to head trauma and multiple body injuries.

Poulos said no other vehicle or person was involved in the accident and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

According to Campbell’s obituary, he served with a number of law enforcement agencies during his career, including the Poplarville Police Department, Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department, Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and was working as a deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department at the time of his death.

Capt. Kelvin Stanford with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department said Campbell served with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department for six years, from 1994 to 2000. Stanford described Campbell as an exceptional man who was a hard worker with great people skills.

“He’ll be dearly missed as a friend to the department and as a past co-worker,” Stanford said.
