George County supervisors have put off until at least June 1 a decision on whether to join in a regional group to oversee development of freight line from Waynesboro to Lucedale.
Supervisors questioned how much it would cost to be involved in the project. They have asked the board attorney to look into the project.
The authority would include Jackson, George, Wayne, Clarke and Lauderdale counties.
Larry Harvey, director of the Wayne County Economic Development District, says building 43 miles of track from Waynesboro to Lucedale would cost about $50 million.
Lucedale is already linked by rail to ports in Pascagoula and Mobile. The project would extend that connection north to Waynesboro.
