Monsanto Co. has laid off 55 workers at its Mississippi facilities and restructured some its operations.
The world’s biggest seed maker has facilities in Scott, Indianola and Hollandale.
Monsanto spokeswoman Janice Person says the Hollandale facility will still be used for manufacturing, while the Scott and Indianola locations will do research and development.
Person says the layoffs were not due to the economy but because of cutbacks in cotton acreage in the country as farmers switch to other crops.
Person says Monsanto will reduce six manufacturing facilities to three; the other two in Texas and Arizona.
