Helena man convicted in 2007 slaying

A Helena man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2007 slaying of a Moss Point woman.

John Brewer Moffett pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter in the stabbing death of Carol Shelby Gattis. Moffett entered the plea in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Moffett told Circuit Judge Dale Harkey that he and Gattis argued when he overheard her talking to a drug dealer about joining in a robbery.

Gattis’ body was found in a ditch off a county road on Jan. 18, 2007, in Helena. She had been stabbed in the neck.
