Public buildings in Scott County will be smoke-free on June 1.
The Scott County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on April 21 to ban all tobacco products from county facilities, citing a savings of 3 percent in health insurance premiums and the desire to improve employees’ health.
Officials said the county could see approximately $20,000 per year saved.
Supervisor Jackie Bradford, one of three supervisors who smokes, supported the ban and says maybe it will help him quit.
Mary Ann Trice, with Blue Cross Blue Shield, says for employees covered under the county’s insurance policy, the company’s tobacco cessation program allows for 90 days of therapy, office visits and hotline assistance as part of their effort to help tobacco users quit.
