Hornets end season with loss

SOSO — Poplarville ended its prep baseball season with a 9-3 loss on the road to homestanding West Jones on Monday night.

The Hornets end the year at 3-19, while the Mustangs are preparing for the first round of the Class 4A South State playoffs that start this weekend and stand 18-6 on the year.

West Jones is the Division 5-5A champion.

Jade Whitten took the loss for the Hornets, while Derrick Martin had an RBI-single and Eli Frierson also drove in a run for Poplarville.

Adam Naquin played his last game for the Hornets Monday night and was the only senior to finish the season on the field for the Hornets.

“We have a good nucleus coming back because we played so many young kids,” first year Hornet head coach J.J. Fortune said.
