Highway renamed for soldier killed in Afghanistan

A two-mile section of U.S. Highway 90 in Gautier has been named in the honor of Maj. Michael Green, a soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
The 36-year-old Gautier native was killed Jan. 7, 2008, when the Humvee he was riding in struck a roadside bomb and exploded.
Green wasn’t scheduled for missions that day, but volunteered.
Green was a former student at Pascagoula High and had been in Afghanistan for about a month, training soldiers to disarm land mines and bombs.
Those who gathered in Gautier Friday to honor Green recalled a man who vowed as a child to serve his country.
A new highway sign will be a permanent reminder of Green’s sacrifice.
