Barbour vetoes furniture manufacturing tax credits

Gov. Haley Barbour has vetoed a bill that would’ve given tax credits to furniture manufacturers in Mississippi.
In striking down the bill, Barbour said there is disagreement among furniture industry executives about whether the tax credits would help companies create or retain jobs.
Barbour also said Monday the credits could strip $9 million out of the $4.7 billion state budget for the year that begins July 1. Officials already are struggling to pay for state programs.
North Mississippi has lost thousands of furniture manufacturing jobs in the past decade as some companies have moved cut-and-sew operations overseas.
The bill is Senate Bill 3197.
