The Henleyfield Volunteer Fire Department will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for a 2,500 square foot addition to a building that has recently been completed.

Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. the public is invited to see the new addition at the official ribbon cutting and house warming. The $334,000 addition was built with grant and fire department funds, said Henleyfield Volunteer Firefighter Daryl Smith.

Henleyfield’s fire department is located on Mississippi 43 N.

The ddition added a kitchen, sleeping accommodations for four people and the capability to have the station double as an emergency operations center. Since the department is now in need of kitchen and bedroom supplies, firefighters and their supporters are holding the house warming after the ribbon cutting. Smith said the department is registered at Wal-Mart.

“We invite everyone to come out and see what’s been accomplished,” Smith said.

For 10 years the department has been attempting to build the addition. With help from a recent $234,000 grant and a $100,000 in matching funds from the department, construction has finally taken place. The work officially started early last year when ground was broken, Smith said.

Before the completion of the addition, there was only room enough for the fire fighting equipment and an office at the fire station. Now, the addition houses all the amenities of home, even a washer and dryer, Smith said.

“We could live there if we had to,” Smith said.

In case of a county-wide emergency, the addition has been built to become an emergency operations center, Smith said.
