UPDATE – Lady Wildcats Sweep

Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats swept East Mississippi’s Lady Lions in a MACJC non-division softball doubleheader here Tuesday, taking an 8-3 win in the first game and a 10-1 blowout victory in five innings in the nightcap.

PRCC improved to 14-6 overall with the sweep, while EMCC dropped to 8-14.

In the opening contest, the Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second innings, but the Lady Lions answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third and a solo run in the fourth to make it 4-3.

Pearl River padded its lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, then finished off East Miss will three in the sixth.

Starter Katie Barrett of Bay High (6-2) picked up the win in going the distance, striking out three and walking three; while EMCC starter Courtney Nunn also went the distance in getting the loss. She struck out four and walked two.

Brooke Lee led the Lady Lions’ six-hit effort with a double, a single, and two RBIs; while Summer Frost, Josei Matthews, Mauri McBride, and Nunn all has base hits.

PRCC finished with 10 hits, led by Virginia Blanchet of Pearl River Central who doubled and had two singes; while Bethany Russell of D’Iberville High smacked a two-run homer in the sixth. Baleigh Volking of Enterprise also homered, while Barrett (one RBI), Laurin Locke of Petal High (two RBIs), and Mykeal Maes of Bay High (two RBIs) all doubled, and Megan Brooks of D’Iberville High and Corinne Fraychineaud of Slidell, La., both singled.

Pearl River committed three errors in the game to East Mississippi’s one.

In the nightcap, the Lady Lions went up 1-0 in the top of the opening frame off an RBI single by Lee before the Lady Wildcats grabbed the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.

In the fourth, PRCC exploded with eight runs to make it 10-1 and the game ended via the eight-run rule after EMCC blanked in the fifth. Starter Fraychineaud (2-2) got the win in going the distance, striking out five and walking one; while East Miss starter Teddie Eden got the loss in here three-and-one-third innings on the mound. She struck out one and walked two before Nunn relieved in the fourth, striking out one.

Lee, Matthews, Portia Randle, and Linsey Upton all singled, accounting for the Lady Lions four hits; while Virginia Blanchet (two RBIs) and Volking (three RBIs) both doubled and singled to pace Pearl River’s 12-hit attack. Miranda Blanchet of Pearl River Central had two base hits, while Fraychineaud had an RBI double and Audrey Gore of Sumrall High, Locke (one RBI), Maes, Russell (one RBI), and Casie Russell of Gautier (two RBIs) all had singles.

PRCC returns to action Thursday when MACJC non-division foe Holmes visits Lady Wildcat Stadium for a 3 p.m. doubleheader, then its back to South Division play Wednesday, March 25, when arch-rival Mississippi Gulf Coast plays host in a 4 p.m. twin bill in Perkinston.
