Residents who live in or close to Picayune can file a report with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department in Picayune instead of taking the trip to Millard.

Reports can now be taken at Picayune’s historic city hall on Goodyear Boulevard, according to a press release from the department.

Ever since Hurricane Katrina destroyed the old office at the old Chimney Square, there has not been an office for the department on the south end. Using the south end substation will allow the department and citizens to save gas by saving them a trip to Millard to file a report.

The office is on the second floor of the historic city hall. Sheriff David Allison said the office can be found by climbing the stairs adjacent to Goodyear Boulevard and after entering the building. The substation office will be the first door on the right.

Not only will this substation allow residents to have closer access to a deputy, but it also is expected to decrease response times and increase county coverage of deputies in the south end of Pearl River County, the release states.

For the time being the office will be not be manned with a full time secretary, but citizens can reach a deputy calling 601-798-5528 and dispatch will send one to the office, the release states.

Allison said if budgets in the coming years allow, a full time secretary could be added to the office at a later date, but currently there are no funds to support one. Once the new Chimney Square building is constructed, another substation will be included.

Allison said he would like to thank Picayune officials for allowing his department to establish a substation in the building until Chimney Square can be reconstructed.
