Picayune perfect in league play

In Bay St. Louis Friday night, Picayune kept pace with Long Beach atop the Division 8-4 standings with an easy 14-1 win over Bay High.

The win makes the Maroon Tide a perfect 4-0 in league play and an impressive 6-1 overall. Picayune and Long Beach are both 4-0 in division action, while St. Stanislaus and D’Iberville are both 2-0 after the Bearcats beat Poplarville and the Warriors beat Pearl River Central Friday night as well.

Picayune’s Bryce Ladner move to 4-0 on the season with the win Friday night, as he scattered three hits and struck out seven in the five inning victory.

“Our goal was to put the ball in play at all costs, especially with runners at third,” Picayune head coach Cayne Stockstill said. “We have been working on that in practice all week. I was proud of our team for being able to accomplish that tonight.”

The Maroon Tide was paced at the plate by Hunter Gill who had a double and two singles and drove in four runs as well as Jared Bales who had a single and two RBI’s. Also, Garrett Williams had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs while Evan Nichelson had a triple and a single and drove in a run.

Picayune plays Gautier twice this week, beginning Tuesday at home, in non-division action.

PRC baseball

In Carriere on Friday, the visiting Warriors completed two game sweep of PRC by scoring a run in top of the seventh to pull out a 7-6 win.

The loss drops PRC to 0-4 in league play.

Blake Herrin took the loss for the Blue Devils in a complete game performance. He is 1-1.

Aaron Lee and Cody Dillard had two hits apiece for PRC.

On Saturday in Biloxi, PRC split a doubleheader with the homestanding Indians winning game one 9-3 and dropping the second game 3-2.

The decisions leave PRC 4-6 overall on the season, with five of those six losses coming by one run.

In game one, Ryan Revette picked up the win to move to 3-1 on the year and Dillard got a save.

Lee drove in a pair of runs for the Blue Devils, while Dillard had a double and a single and Brett Tortorich had a three run double and drove in four for PRC.

In game two, Dillard took the loss in relief of Dustin Dennis.

Lee had a triple and Tortorich had an RBI for the Blue Devils.

PRC hosts St. Stanislaus in league play Tuesday.

Poplarville Baseball

In Poplarville on Friday, The Hornet had a no-hitter from Taylor Carr going into the fifth inning before visiting Long Beach stormed back to take a 6-4 win.

Carr took the loss and is now 0-3.

Eli Frierson had an RBI-double for the Hornets while Jade Whitten had a pair of doubles for Poplarville.

The loss drops Poplarville to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in league play. Long beach is 8-1 overall.

In Tuesday’s loss to the Bearcats, Poplarville also led early before the Bearcats won.

Poplarville got two hits, including a double, from Maverick Smith and Eric Ladner took the loss.

The Hornets meet Bay High Tuesday in league play.

Poplarville softball

In Biloxi on Friday, Poplarville remained unbeaten and moved to 10-0 on the year with a 3-0 win over St. Patrick.

Megan Ladner allowed just two hits and struck out 12 on the hill, moving to 8-0 with the win. Allysa Graeter had a triple and single for Poplarville while Paige Miller added three singles to the winning cause for the Lady Hornets.

Poplarville travels to Purvis Monday.

Picayune softball

In Biloxi over the weekend, Picayune split four games in the Biloxi Tournament.

On Friday, Picayune beat St. Martin 1-0 as Mallorie Mixon drove in Hillary Dickens with the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Jessie Frierson got the win.

Ocean Springs then beat Picayune 7-0, as Frierson took the loss and Picayune managed just two hits.

On Saturday, Vancleave beat Picayune 2-0 as Dickens took the loss and Picayune managed just three singles.

But, the Lady Tide bounced back to beat Pass Christian 11-5 as Frierson picked up the win to move to 6-4 on the year.

Dickens and Mixon had a pair of hits apiece for the lady Tide in the win, that moved Picayune to 7-6 on the year.

Picayune hosts D’Iberville Tuesday night.

PRCC softball

Pearl River Community College took a pair of one run wins on the road at Faulkner State on Friday, winning game one of the doubleheader 5-4 and taking the nightcap 8-7.

In the opener, Molly Stell (2-1) took the win and got support at the plate from Baleigh Volking who had three single and Bethany Russell who had a double and a single as well as Mykeal Maes who had a two run home run. Corinne Fraychineaud added a triple and Audrey Gore a double and Miranda Blanchet had an RBI-single.

In game two, Katie Barrett (3-3) took the win and Volking had a another big game with a two run homer and a triple and she drove in four runs while Blanchet had double and a single and two RBI’s. Also, Barrett and Fraychineaud both had two singles apiece while Russell had a two run homer and Laurin Locke added a double.

Faulkner State swept Pearl River 8-1, 6-5 in an earlier doubleheader played Feb. 20 in Poplarville.

PRCC is now 9-5 overall and returns to action when it hosts MACJC South Division rival Southwest Mississippi Tuesday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader in Lady Wildcat Stadium.
