Hornets beat D’Iberville

POPLARVILLE — Pop-larville’s Eli Frierson gave the host Hornets a quick advantage Monday night in Division 8-4A action and then pitcher Taylor Carr made its stand up as Poplarville knocked off visiting D’Iberville 6-1.

The win makes the Hornets 2-15 overall and 2-6 in league play while the Warriors drop to 3-5 in league play and barely are holding on to the fourth and final playoff spot. The Warriors face St. Stanislaus this week in two games, while Poplarville faces Pearl River Central in a pair of league game as well, weather permitting of course.

Frierson blasted a two run bomb over the left field wall in the bottom of the first to put the Hornets up for good.

Carr moved to 2-5 on the year with the win, as he scattered six hits and struck out six as well in the complete game performance.

The young hurler kept the Warrior hitters at bay all night with an assortment of different pitches he threw for strikes.

Meanwhile, his teammates went back to work to give him more help starting in the third frame, when Derrick Martin scored on a fielder’s choice by Maverick Smith to make it 3-0 and then Carr drove in a run with a ground out. Smith later scored to make it 5-0 heading into the fourth inning.

In the fourth, Donovan Touchet had an RBI-single for the Hornets.
