The USS Makin Island, an amphibious assault ship, recently completed its Navy acceptance sea trial in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Northrop Grumman vessel is eighth Wasp-class amphibious assault ship being built by Northrop at its Pascagoula facility. It is designed to transport Marines.
Makin Island is the first large deck amphibious assault ship to use a gas turbine, electric-powered propulsion system.
In December, officials reported the ship performed well during five days of builder’s trials.
The Makin Island is scheduled for an October commissioning at its San Diego homeport.
