Traffic stop nets nearly a ton of marijuana
A routine traffic stop by the Hattiesburg Police Department’s interdiction team uncovered about 1,700 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $2 million.
Hattiesburg Police arrested 53-year-old Andy Lope and 33-year-old Ricky Lopez, both of Nuevo, Calif., and took them to Forrest County Regional Jail where they charged each with one count of possession of marijuana over a kilogram with the intent to distribute.
Police say officers stopped a 2000 red Freightliner with a trailer Saturday night on Interstate 59. The vehicle was driven by Andy Lopez whose nervous behavior prompted further investigation.
The narcotics and vehicle were seized by police.
