A Brookhaven man has been convicted for the second time in the 2006 beating death of 36-year-old Jewel Duane Douglas in Lincoln County.

Michael Leggett will serve life in prison without parole after being sentenced last week as a habitual criminal. Leggett was convicted last year, but Circuit Judge Mike Taylor later ruled that the district attorney’s office withheld critical information from defense attorneys.

Taylor cited 11 instances of misconduct and said there were more.

After a four-day trial at the Forrest County Courthouse, the 33-year-old Leggett was found guilty Friday of beating Douglas to death with a tire tool on Oct. 11, 2006.

Due to the publicity on the first trial, the defense was granted a change of venue.
