A single vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon took the life of a Poplarville man.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Corporal Johnny Poulos said the accident took place at 1:15 p.m. on Highway 53 about a quarter of a mile south of Juniper Grove Road.

For an unknown reason a 1997 Buick Regal driven by 48 year-old Steven Gipson of Poplarville left the road as he was traveling south bound on Mississippi Highway 53, Poulos said. The vehicle collided with a tree after leaving the road.

Gipson is reported to have died at the scene of the accident, Poulos said.

Gipson’s only passenger, Mary A. Gipson, 72, of Poplarville, was transported to Forrest General Hospital with serious injuries.

No other cars were involved in the accident and the involvement of drugs and alcohol, as with the rest of the accident, is under investigation.
