Someone allegedly is fraudulently asking county residents for donations to the Nicholson Volunteer Fire Department.
Fire Chief Bobby Robbins said his department is not responsible for the calls and residents should not give the callers any money.
“Money’s too hard to come by to have a bunch of crooks take it away from you,” Robbins said.
The address one of the callers gave out appears to be a P.O. Box in Gulfport and the calls appear to be geared towards the elderly, Robbins said.
None of the other five county fire departments reached by phone Saturday morning reported having the same problem. Carriere Fire Chief Tom Wagner said that in the past he has received reports of a similar calls, but not recently.
Poplarville Fire Chief Kris Foster advises residents to check with their local fire department before donating to people making unsolicited phone calls.
