Picayune splits games in tourney

Picayune’s Lady Tide continued their winning ways of recently in the final day of the annual Picayune Holiday Basketball Tournament Tuesday night.

The Lady Tide pulled out an exciting 66-60 win over Fontainebleau in the last day of the event, after trailing by as many as eight in the third period.

The win was the fourth straight for head coach Kristie Mitchell’s crew, and the Picayune girls stand 4-9 on the season.

Monique Brown tallied 26 for the winning team, while Janea Wills added 12 to the winning cause.

Jennifer Beehler, thanks to nine three-point baskets, paced the visitors with a game high 29 points.

Her four treys in the third period put the Lady Bulldogs in the lead before Picayune rallied.

The Picayune boys couldn’t make it a clean sweep against the school from Mandeville, La., as Fontainebleau beat the Maroon Tide 62-47.

Reggie Bailey scored 18 for the Maroon Tide, as they fell to 7-6.

Both Picayune teams travel to Ocean Springs to play Pass Christian on Saturday.

Chris Nixon scored 11 in a win Monday night for Picayune against Northshore.

In earlier action Tuesday, the Biloxi girls won their second straight game in the event beating Pope John Paul 48-30 as Camilla Dunnings scored 10 points for the Lady Indians.

Also, Slidell, coached by former Picayune assistant Bill Chimento, beat Northshore 56-37 in boys action as Tevin Parker scored 20 for the winners.

Also, the Hancock Hawks dropped their second straight game in the tourney falling to Salmen High 85-42 as R. J. Scott scored 27 for the Spartans and Jon Greco led Hancock with 10 points.
