Holiday closing times listed

The Christmas season is upon us, followed by the New Year’s holiday observance with its many college football bowl games. As a result many agencies and businesses have changed their hours of operation for both holidays.

Christmas Day is Thursday, Dec. 25, and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2009, is one week later. Most retail businesses will be closed those two days only unless otherwise noted by the particular business.

Of the two grocery stores in Poplarville, the IGA-Sunflower will close at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Christmas Eve, and be closed all day Thursday. For New Year’s Eve, IGA will close at 7 p.m. and be open New Year’s Day until 4 p.m.

The Sunflower in Picayune will be open until 9 p.m. Christmas Eve and close Christmas Day. New Year’s Eve the store will be open for its regular business hours and close at noon on New Year’s Day.

Wal-Mart in Picayune will close at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, and be closed Christmas Day. They will reopen on Friday for regular hours throughout New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Both Winn-Dixie locations in Picayune will be open Christmas Eve until 7 p.m. and Christmas Day until 3 p.m. The stores will be open regular business hours New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Both Walgreens locations in Picayune will be open until midnight Christmas Eve and until 6 p.m. Christmas Day. Those locations will return to regular business hours for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Greer’s Food Store in Poplarville will be open for regular hours Christmas Eve and closed all day Christmas Day; for New Year’s Day, Greer’s will be closed.

Poplarville’s two pharmacies — Boone’s and Pearl River Drugs — both will be closed all day Thursday for both Christmas Day, Dec. 25, and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1. Pharmacies in Picayune, including those in grocery stores and Wal-Mart, will also be closed Christmas Day.

Hancock Bank in both Picayune and Poplarville will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, and be closed all day Dec. 25; for New Year’s, the bank will close only on Jan. 1 for branches in both cities.

BankPlus be open from 7 a.m. to 12 noon in Poplarville and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Picayune, Wednesday, Dec. 24. Locations in both cities will close all day Christmas day. For New Year’s, they will close Jan. 1 only.

Region’s Bank in Picayune will close at noon Christmas Eve and be closed Christmas Day. New Year’s Eve the bank will close at 2 p.m. and be closed New Year’s Day.

First National Bank will be closed Thursday only for both Christmas and New Year’s Day. Picayune locations will close at 1 p.m. Christmas Eve. New Year’s Eve the bank will be open for regular business hours but close New Year’s Day.

The First Bank in Picayune will be open Christmas Eve until 1 p.m. and will close Christmas Day. New Year’s Eve the bank will be open during its regular hours, but will close New Year’s Day.

The United States Post Office in Poplarville and Picayune will close at 12 noon Wednesday, Dec. 24 and reopen Friday, Dec. 26, for regular hours; the same schedule will apply for New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 31, and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, and reopen on Friday.

Classes at Pearl River Community College ended Wednesday, Dec. 17, for the Christmas break. Administrative offices at the college close at 4 p.m., Friday. Dec. 19.

Classes at PRCC resume Jan. 12, 2009, but administrative offices re-open Monday, Jan. 5, at 8 a.m.

Offices of Pearl River County government will be closed both Thursday and Friday, both Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1-2.

The City offices in Poplarville will also be closed both Thursdays and Fridays for Christmas and New Years. City of Picayune offices will also be closed both Thursdays, and any office working in new four-day work week will still be closed both Fridays. Offices in the city typically open on Friday will be open.

The Poplarville Area Chamber of Commerce office at North Main and West North Street will observe the same schedules as the city and county. The Picayune Chamber of Commerce will close for Christmas and New Year’s Day and reopen on both Fridays.
