Some election officials in Mississippi are again pushing for an early-voting system, similar to those used in 31 other states.

Early voting differs from absentee voting in that voters may cast a ballot at a designated place without offering an excuse for not being able to vote on election day.

Lowndes County Circuit Clerk Haley Salazar — who sits on a state election reform study panel — said she supports letting all voters cast ballots before Election Day.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann — Mississippi’s top elections officer — said he also supports early voting. Both Hosemann and Salazar stress that there would have to be strict security measures adopted if early voting is approved. Mississippi lawmakers killed an early voting measure earlier this year.
