Vicksburg nixes cameras to watch drivers

Public opposition has killed a proposal to put cameras at some Vicksburg intersections to watch for motorists running stoplights.
Several cities across Mississippi are using traffic cameras.
Vicksburg officials heard a presentation last week from RedSpeed USA of Lombard, Ill.
The company said cameras would film people running red lights, and car owners would be billed by mail. Money collected would be split 50-50 between the city and RedSpeed.
Mayor Laurence Leyens says he’s gotten negative feedback. He says the issue could come up again in a year or two when more information is collected.
