The boys consolation game of the Pearl River County Tournament was one of the most exciting of the night, as Picayune earned its first win for new head coach Thomas Taylor puling out a 55-52 win in overtime.
“It wasn’t real pretty, but it was good to get a win,” Taylor, whose team is now 1-3, said. “We’ve got to keep getting better, and maybe this will be a step in that direction.”
The Maroon Tide led most of the way, before PRC forced a tie at 47-47 with 12 seconds to play when Je’Barr Locure sank a pair of pressure free throws.
But Picayune’s Vince Gable scored eight points in overtime, including a pair of key free throws with :37 seconds left, putting the Maroon Tide in the lead for good. PRC’s Josh Nixon missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Nixon led all scorers with 23 points, including 14 in the first half. Locure added 12 points and Trey Miller 10 to the PRC cause. The Blue Devils are now 2-5.
Gable paced Picayune with 18 points, while Courtney Nixon added 14.
Picayune, along with the Lady Tide, is back in action Tuesday night as both teams travel to Stone High.
• In the boy’s championship game, Hancock pulled out an overtime win over Poplarville.
The win was the second straight for the Hawks, who now stand 3-4 on the year.
Details from this game will be in Sunday’s Picayune Item.
