Three jailers have been fired in Jones County after a woman was allegedly assaulted by a male inmate placed in her cell.

Sheriff Alex Hodge says the unidentified woman was brought to the jail for DUI last week and was moved to a cell by herself when she got into dispute with other women prisoners.

Hodge says jailers placed a male inmate in the same cell, apparently having forgotten about the woman. Hodge says several hours later, other men were placed into the cell with her and during that time she claims she was assaulted.

Hodge says the district attorney’s office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are investigating sexual assault allegations.
