Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran says the city has received bids for work to build a park commemorating the original site of the Fort Maurepas.

The new park will commemorate the French Colonial fort erected by the French in 1699 after the landing of explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville. The city has secured nearly $2 million in grants for the work.

Moran says the city received two bids with a low base bid of $1.5 million. Aldermen may act on a contract in December.

The fort was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Moran says most of the construction should be completed in time for the next annual landing re-enactment in spring.
