Authorities combed a wooded area in McComb over the weekend after a dog dragged up a human skull.

Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman said the dog had brought up a long bone and a human shoe earlier, but the dog’s owner didn’t think anything about it.

Sheriff Mark Shepherd said officials searched the woods near Higgins Middle School football field just outside McComb city limits.

Though officials found small bone fragments, Shepherd said they couldn’t be sure they were human.

Pittman said the skull looks like it might have come from a female.

Shepherd said the remains will be sent to the state crime lab on Monday with hopes of identifying them.
