The Humane Society of the United States has announced that people can now earn a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a person involved in illegal animal fighting in Mississippi.

Dale Bartlett, the deputy manager for animal cruelty issues with the Humane Society, said Monday that such tipsters are often the only way law enforcement learns about animal fighting.

Cockfighting and animal cruelty are misdemeanors in Mississippi, while dog fighting is a felony.

Bartlett says people who want to report animal fighting should call their local law enforcement or animal control agency. He says people can ask to remain anonymous.

Bartlett says they need to tell the official that they are interested in receiving the Humane Society’s $5,000 reward.
