School board OKs drug testing

Hattiesburg schools can now test any student for alcohol or drugs based on suspicious behavior.
School officials say students will be tested within five hours after an administrator suspects they are intoxicated or impaired. Students will be transported to a medical facility for secure, private testing.
Members of the city school board, which approved the policy on Tuesday, say it will be implemented after parents and students are notified about the new policy and administrators are trained by the Hattiesburg Police Department to recognize signs of alcohol and drug use.
The school district currently has a random-selection, drug-testing program only for students in extracurricular activities.
