7 new West Nile cases reported in Mississippi

Health officials are reporting seven new cases of the West Nile virus in Mississippi, bringing the total number of state cases this year to 93.

There have been three deaths blamed on the mosquito-transmitted virus.

The new cases reported on Monday are in Hinds, Jones, Leake, Leflore, Lincoln and Madison counties. The Mississippi Department of Health also reported one new case of LaCrosse Encephalitis (LAC) in Madison County.

The agency reports both confirmed and probable cases to the public and conducts statewide mosquito testing with its most intensive surveillance during the peak mosquito reproduction months of July, August and September.
