Teachers’ credentials may go online

In October, the state Board of Education will consider a proposal to post teacher credentials online.

The board will decide on a contract for a Web-based program that will store and track educator licenses. The new program could cost about $1 million.

Cindy Coon, with the Mississippi Department of Education, says similar programs are in place in other states, including Louisiana, Georgia and Texas.

Coon says the program could be in place by next summer.

The snapshots of a license would show the type of degree the educator has attained, the subjects the person is certified to teach, when the license will expire and if it is valid.

Coon says personal information would be omitted.
