2008 writing contest winners announced

The Picayune Writers’ Group has received the judge’s scores and tallied the results for the 2008 Anthology Contest. Winners are as follows: Senior Fiction, First Place, “Telsa, and the Wizard of Menlo” by Richard Fothe; Second Place, “Garden Gnome” by Don Wicks; Third Place, “No One Chose Him” by Wuanita Talley. Senior Non-fiction, First Place, “Acquisition, July 4, 1995” by Dee Ann Andrews; Second Place, “Lost in the Shuffle” by Lee J. Barras; Third Place (tie), “A Perfect Day” by Dee Ann Andrews and “It Wasn’t My Fault” by Ida Mae Burnor. Adult Fiction, First Place, “Toddler Receives Pink Slip” by Bronie Victory; Second Place, “The Boogie Man” by Elizabeth Flynt; Third Place, “First Chair” by Marilyn Grather. Adult Non-fiction, First Place, “And I Wonder?” By Lynne Adams Barze; Second Place, “Finding Peace “by Bill Jackson; Third Place, “My Dream of the Rainbow Bridge” by Lynne Adams Barze’. Nineteen and Under Fiction, First Place, “A Shimmer of Light” by Mary Pollitz. Twelve and Under Fiction, First Place, “Forgiven in Tory” by Madelaine Colarossi; Second Place, “A Surprise Party for Flipper” by Averi Elizabeth Amacker. Senior Poetry, First Place, “Exparte” by Don Wicks; Second Place, “Lentamente Funebre” by Bob Patterson; Third Place, “Power Failure” by Bob Patterson. Adult Poetry, First Place, “The One to Beat” by Ted Barze’; Second Place, “You Get My Drift” by Bronie Victory; Third Place (tie), “Sincerely Yours” by Ronnie O. Lindsey and “Every Rose has a Thorn” by Lynne Adams Barze’. Nineteen And Under Poetry, First Place, “Seeing” by Mary Pollitz; Second Place, “Angels” by Mary Pollitz. Twelve and Under Poetry, First Place, “I Like” by Kristina Ziemer.

Each winner will receive a copy of the 2008 Anthology of Local Writers and a certificate of merit. The Anthology, will be published in October, and will feature Brig. Gen. John Hawkins Napier III who wrote Lower Pearl River’s Piney Woods, Its Land and People, a concise history of the area, as well as many historical articles published in the Picayune Item.

The Picayune Writers’ Group now meets at the Centraplex (Old Mississippi Mall) on Memorial Blvd. (Hwy 43 S.) across from the Mexican Restaurant, on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m., except for the first Tuesday of the month where they hold their Open Mike at PJ’s coffee house.
