A surveillance of a thoroughfare that leads to another state caught two suspected drug traffickers.

The operation was conducted Wednesday after Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department investigators received information that drug trafficking was suspected on Miss. 26, said Narcotics Investigator Capt. Donnie Saucier.

An investigation into the matter led to the arrest of Ronreco Broughton, 28, of 5307 Billy St., Moss Point and Andrew Broughton, 19, of #43 Nacy St., Moss Point.

While waiting at the crossroads near the Louisiana Mississippi state line on Miss. 26 they observed a vehicle driving east towards Poplarville from Bogalusa, La. in a reckless manner. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle.

During the stop the investigators observed circumstances that lead them to suspect criminal activity was taking place. Ronreco refused to give investigators his consent to search the vehicle so Lt. George Dominguez and his K-9 partner Bartja were called out to the scene, Saucier said.

Bartja was walked around the outside of the car and alerted to the possibility of narcotics in the car, giving investigators probable cause to search the vehicle, Saucier said. The search of the interior of the car produced 29 grams of cocaine and 1.8 grams of crack cocaine. Ronreco was found to have $1,182 on his person.

Both suspects were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Ronreco was additionally charged with careless driving and driving with a suspended driver’s license, Saucier said.

The street value of the recovered narcotics totaled more than $3,000, Saucier said.
