Charlie Carter of Picayune was killed in the early morning hours of Wednesday when his Chevrolet pickup truck struck the rear tires of an 18-wheeler’s trailer.

Carter, 79, died due to trauma sustained in the accident, said Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage. An autopsy was performed in Gulfport that day.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Cpl. Johnny Poulos said the accident occurred at 5:33 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of McNeill Steephollow Road and U.S. 11. As the large gravel truck, driven by Lowell Spiers, 40, of Picayune, pulled out onto U.S. 11 from McNeill Steephollow Road Carter hit the truck trailer’s rear tires.

Spiers suffered no injuries as a result of the accident.

The incident is still under investigation, Poulos said.
