Highway Patrol issues more than 5,000 tickets

The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol says it issued more than 5,000 tickets over the Fourth of July weekend.

The counting period began at 6 p.m. Thursday and ended Sunday night.

The tickets issued by troopers include: 134 for DUI, 229 for failure to wear seat belts and 87 for failure to use child restraints.

Highway patrol officials also reported 40 drivers were arrested.
