An eight year-old girl died following a golf cart accident.

County Administrator and family member Adrain Lumpkin said that the accident took place Monday evening between 5:30 and 6. At that time Laken Lumpkin, 8, daughter of Melissa and Allen Lumpkin, was driving a golf cart. A wheel apparently came off the cart as Laken Lumpkin was driving it, causing it to flip over on top of her.

She was transported to Highland Community Hospital before being rerouted to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. She died after 10 p.m. Wednesday evening as a result of her injuries, Adrain Lumpkin said.

An autopsy is being conducted today, said Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage.
