The FBI’s Cyber Crime Division is investigating a security breach on the University of Southern Miss Web site.

A news release from school officials says there is no evidence that there was any unauthorized use of data from the site, www.usm.edu. But Homer Coffman, Southern Miss’ chief information officer, says some of the information on the site “was used to send out spam e-mail messages to the campus community.”

No other Web sites associated with the university were affected.

The breach was detected Wednesday and the site was down for 12 hours Friday while authorities examined the site.

Coffman says individuals will be contacted if authorities find their information has been taken or used.
