A set of events are scheduled to take place around Picayune’s Krewe of Roses, one of which will take place a week before the parade rolls down Goodyear Boulevard late this month.

The 10th annual Krewe of Roses Ball is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, at Magnolia Columns. The presentation of this year’s court will begin at 7 p.m. with a hot buffet to follow. Musical entertainment for the night will be performed by “Witness,” from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person and can obtained at the Picayune Main Street office on West Canal Street, or at the north branch of Hancock Bank near Picayune’s Fire Station 1, said Krewe of Roses Chairperson Frieda Dobson. Questions about the ball can be directed to Dobson at 601-347-3080.

This year’s queen will be Mary Ellen Wheat, who was the Krewe’s first queen 10 years ago. Her king will be Rex Thompson, who is Hattiesburg’s WDAM 7 weather personality, Dobson said.

“We will (also) do a presentation of all of the past kings and queens,” Dobson said.

This year’s Grand Marshall is Ed Pinero Jr., and the emcee at this year’s ball will be Marvin Bebee.

The Saturday after the ball, the Krewe’s parade will roll down Goodyear Boulevard, following the traditional Civic Woman’s Club Christmas parade route. Roll time for the parade is scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 26.

Float entries will need to fill out an application, available only at the Picayune Main Street office. Phone call entries for floats will not be accepted, Dobson said. No more than 75 entries will be accepted for this year’s parade.

People interested in joining the Krewe can do so at the Picayune Main Street office. Not only will new members have the ball and a ride in the parade to look forward to, but the Queen’s party and the Captain’s party are also scheduled, Dobson said. Dues to join the Krewe are $125. That price also covers the price of one ticket to the upcoming ball.
