Ann Spain Hawks

Mrs. Ann Spain Hawks, 82, of Mt. Airy, N.C., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 17, 2008. Ann was born in Mount Airy on March 27, 1925 to Walter Hamlin and Mattie Elizabeth Webster Spain. She was a giving and caring mother, businesswoman, friend, and was one of the first women Realtors in Surry County. She also served her community as past president of the Women’s Business Club in Mt. Airy.

In 1982 she relocated to Picayune, Miss., to care for her sister and worked as an executive secretary with the Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity (NORDA) at the Stennis Space Center. Upon retiring from Civil Service, she relocated to the warmer climate of Florida where she passed away in the loving company of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E.M. “Bill” Hawks; her parents, and all her siblings, two brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Ann Hawks and David H. Good of Merritt Island, Fla., a daughter, Sue Carole Hawks Stanish of Mt. Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, E.M. “Marty” and Peggy Hawks of Matthews, N.C.; nine grandchildren, David Herald Good, II, Charles Glen Gunter, Jr., Dale Allen Gunter, II, Joseph Scott Stanish, Mary Ann Stanish Montgomery, Avery Joy Hawks Corbett, Ashley Elizabeth Hawks, and William “Bill” Christopher Hawks; eleven great grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces; a brother-in-law, Homer “H.J.” Hawks of Mooresville, N.C.; and two sisters-in-law, Lucille Mahood Spain of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Melba Hawks of Pikeville, Tenn.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Steve Lindsley. Committal will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
