Quality-of-life complaints from residents prompted an undercover operation to net 19 arrests on prostitution-related charges, said Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford.

Weatherford said the complaints were shared at his weekly “Partners with Police” meetings in neighborhoods and lodged on the Police Department’s Web site.

Over the weekend, police arrested eight women, nine men and two boys. All but one was charged with prostitution or solicitation, Weatherford said.

“One of the men wanted $20 for arranging the deal,” Weatherford said. “One of the juveniles wanted a reduced rate. He said he only had a few dollars in his pocket.”

Weatherford said those arrested were each given a bond of $1,000 and face a $200 fine or up to six months in jail.

The Gulfport Police Department arrested the following from the undercover prostitution operation: Matilda Alexander, Nina Alexander, Patricia Cuevas-Magnusen, Susan Holt, Tracy Meyer, Norfleet Smith and Deanna Varnado, all on prostitution charges; Jesus Arellano, Benny Brown, James Foxworth, Dwight King, Anthony Loper, Jimmie Martin, James Maxwell, Ravaire Prince, David Reeter and two boys, all on soliciting prostitution; and Shelly Pruitt for possession of paraphernalia.
