Spence announces candidacy

I, Billy R. Spence, would like to announce my candidacy for the office of Supervisor, District 3, for Pearl River County on the Republican ticket.

I have been married to Sue Penton Spence for 37 years. My wife and I have four children and are the proud grandparents of nine grandchildren. We also have two daughters-in-law and one son-in-law. My wife and I are life-long residents of Pearl River County, as well as my children and grandchildren. I know what it’s like to raise a family here in Pearl River County.

The following are some of my concerns: Our taxes, building codes, the issues surrounding the landfill, volunteer fire departments and our schools that help educate our future. I also feel strongly that our county government should be treated as a business, not just a job, and respected as such.

I was road foreman for this county for 10 years. I know how the Unit System works and I feel that there are some necessary changes needed to make this system run more smoothly for all the people of Pearl River County. During my 10 years with the county, I was involved with many projects in District 3, as well as other areas of this county. If I am elected, I plan to work for all the people of Pearl River County, not only District 3.

I am interested in forming a committee from all areas of District 3. I feel that this committee would benefit all citizens as a whole by bringing your ideas and needs to the county government. If I am elected, and an issue comes before the board that I did not understand, I would not support it until getting more information on the issue and input from the voters in this county. I will not make false promises to anyone, but I can tell you that I will stand up for what is right for the people of Pearl River County. I can also assure you that I can do this with an inside knowledge with my experiences as road foreman.

I know the importance of researching and taking advantage of the many grants that may be available to help our people with their tax burdens. I also believe that we should court different types of businesses to come to our county to help build revenue.

During my campaign, when I have knocked on doors and met people, I have had people all over District 3 tell me that we need a change. If elected, I will see to it that your needs are addressed. I humbly ask for your vote and support on Aug. 7. May God bless each and every one of you, the Citizens of Pearl River County.
