The Poplarville Amateur Radio Club will host its worldwide field day in honor of Worldwide Communications Day Friday through Sunday.

Carolyn Nelson of the radio club said the field day will be set up in Poplarville City Park at about 7 or 7:30 p.m. Friday in order to kick off Saturday morning and it will last until around 1 p.m. Sunday. Members of the radio club will be attempting to contact other amateur radio operators from all over the world.

Nelson said the day is being sponsored “to show that amateur radio is here and ready for emergencies.”

Radio sets will be available for the public to try out for themselves, Nelson said. There will also be Boy Scouts and other members of the radio club available to guide people should they need help.

“Ham radio is not something kids are interested in anymore,” Nelson said. “We hope to use this field day to raise interest in ham radio.”

The radio club hopes to make the field day an annual event, Nelson said.

The Poplarville Amateur Radio Club currently has approximately 24 members.

Admission to the event is free, but people will need to bring their own supplies such as refreshments and sleeping bags if they intend to spend the night, Nelson said.
