Former Pass Christian police investigator Tom Pustay was sentenced Monday to 40 years for sexual assault of a child.

Circuit Court Judge Steve Simpson sentenced Pustay to 15 years for each of two counts of touching a child for lustful purposes and 25 years for each of three counts of sexual battery.

The two 15-year sentences will run at the same time. That will be followed by the three 25-year sentences, which also will run concurrently. That brings the total to 40 years.

A Harrison County jury deliberated nearly seven hours May 11 before finding Pustay guilty on five of the six counts he faced.

The victim had accused the former chief investigator of the Pass Christian Police Department of sexual misconduct that started when she was 9 and lasted seven years.

Pustay worked in law enforcement for 23 years before he resigned after being arrested in March 2005.
