A Slidell, La., man died in an accident that occurred during the early morning hours of Monday while the passenger of the vehicle was left with minor injuries.

Herbert E. Fields, 63, of 57835 McMannis Dr., Slidell, was driving north on Interstate 59 when for some unknown reason his vehicle went off the right side of the road, according to an incident report from the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

After the vehicle left the road, it impacted a tree with the left side, which caused it to overturn and catch fire, the report states. The passenger, identified as Nancy T. Cooper, 22, of 1007 Merrydale Rd., had only minor injuries and was transported to Highland Community Hospital, the report states.

Fields died as a result of his injuries in the incident, the report states.

Joe Gazzo, Public Information Officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, was unable to provide further details on the incident.
