Picayune man dies in wreck

An accident in St. Tammany Parish La. took the life of a Picayune resident this past weekend.
According to a press release from the Louisiana State Police Troop L the incident occurred March 4 at about 1:50 a.m. on La. 433 at milepost 3.4. The driver, identified as Jacob Helmig, 25, of Picayune, was driving a 2006 Ford pickup westbound on La. 433 when it began to travel off the roadway to the right and gradually proceed down an embankment into a ditch, the release states.
The vehicle traveled about 165 feet and began to rotate counterclockwise. The right side of the tires struck the dirt embankment at the end of the ditch and the vehicle went airborne rotating clockwise and traveling about 30 feet. The vehicle then traveled another 68 feet before impacting a large tree with the front left fender, causing the vehicle to overturn onto the roof, the release states.
Helmig was transported by Acadian Ambulance to NorthShore Regional Medical Center in Slidell, La. where he was treated for severe injuries. Alcohol was suspected in the crash and blood was taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The release states that Helmig was not wearing his seatbelt.
On March 4 at about 5:25 p.m. Helmig was pronounced dead at NorthShore Regional Medical Center by Dr. Andrew Marsh.
