A Tennessee man has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the 2005 stabbing death of an elderly woman at her Biloxi home.

Joshua Teague, 21, of Clinton, Tenn., pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of murder. Harrison County Judge Steve Simpson ordered him to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Prosecutors said Iva Jewel Moore, a 92-year-old widow, was stabbed 23 times during a burglary at her home in Biloxi on Feb. 23, 2005. Moore’s body was found dead by her son.

Teague’s capital murder trial was set for next week. Prosecutors said Moore’s family agreed to the plea by Teague to the murder charge.

Prosecutors said Teague admitted he stabbed Moore five or six times. Matthew McKamey, a co-defendant, awaits trial, also on a capital murder charge.

Teague told the judge that McKamey broke in through a back window, let him in and put a pillow over Moore’s face. He said Moore was sitting in a living room chair.

“He started stabbing her, so I started stabbing her, too,” Teague said.

Teague said they stole Moore’s TV, VCR and other items and sold them to a pawn shop.

Prosecutors said Biloxi police retrieved Moore’s remote control from a stolen vehicle Teague was driving and Teague led police to the knife he used.

McKamey, also of Clinton, Tenn., is scheduled for trial in April.

A third suspect, Clyde Irvin Gunter, is serving a five-year sentence on a guilty plea to accessory after the fact. Gunter, 29, is from Louisville, Ala., according to a www.sunherald.com article.
