The death of a Lumberton resident Saturday lead to murder charges being pressed on the victim’s roommate.

Deputies with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department were called out to the home of Jacqueline Daughtery by the son of the victim, said Lead Investigator Chris Lott. Daughtery, of 21 Daughtery Rd., Lumberton, was found covered in blood from an apparent gun shot wound, according to a release from the department. The obituary from White Funeral Home lists the victim’s age as 63.

Lott said the son telephoned the sheriff’s department after he went to check on his mother and found her covered in blood. When deputies and emergency personnel arrived, they found Daughtery sitting at the kitchen table covered in blood and determined that she apparently had been shot, the release states. The details of the autopsy were not available at press time.

As deputies further processed the scene, they found another female in the residence and a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, the release states. The suspect was determined to have been a roommate since Thanksgiving and a friend of Daughtery’s, Lott said.

The next day, the suspect identified as Linda Simmions, 61, also of 21 Daughtery Rd., Lumberton, was charged with the murder of Daughtery, the release states. During her initial appearance on Sunday she was taken before Justice Court Judge Nell Cowart who set no bond for Daughtery, the release states. Simmions is being held at the Pearl River County Justice Center until her preliminary hearing takes place, the release states.

Services for Daughtery are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Lumberton.
