Soon, the student who set out to raise money to help the people of the Amish community in a far away state will hand deliver her donation.
Dawn Bechtel, Kasey Mitchell’s mentor for her senior project to raise $10,000, said that she and Mitchell will fly to Philadelphia, Penn., then travel to the Amish community. Mitchell was able to raise $9,922.82 in her efforts to help the people who suffered in the recent school house shooting, but a last minute anonymous donation topped off the collection to bring the total to $10,000, Bechtel said.
When the pair arrive at their destination, Bechtel said that Katherine Wood-Jacobs will provide them with a place to stay.
Shortly after they arrive, the Amish plan to show their appreciation.
“They are going to have a nice dinner for us and honor Kasey for all the hard work,” Bechtel said.
During her stay, Mitchell will have the opportunity to learn about the Amish culture as she visits an Amish school house and spends time in an Amish home to see the way they live, Bechtel said.
Bechtel said they will leave Friday morning and arrive in Philadelphia in the afternoon. They plan to arrive back in Picayune Monday afternoon.
