A two-vehicle accident on Mississippi 26 near Poplarville Thursday took the lives of two people and leaving the occupants of the second vehicle in moderate condition.
An east bound van on Miss. 26 went off the road just as a west bound truck pulling a SUV on a trailer was approaching, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Information Officer Joe Gazzo. The driver of the van overcompensated to get back on the road, flipping the van twice before striking the west bound truck and causing both vehicles to catch fire, Gazzo said. The passenger of the van was ejected during the course of the accident and pronounced dead on scene while the driver of the van was burned inside the van and also was pronounced dead on scene, Gazzo said.
“Traffic was tied up for about an hour both ways,” Gazzo said.
Occupants of the truck were taken to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg and listed in moderate condition, Gazzo said.
Names of the deceased and the occupants of the truck were not yet available, Gazzo said.
