A man driving a pickup truck that was towing stolen personal watercraft was sought Monday after he drove through a routine traffic stop and led law officers on a chase before fleeing on foot near the Mississippi line, authorities said.

Mobile police spokesman Eric Gallichant said a female passenger in the truck was taken into custody for questioning Sunday night. He said investigators had not determined if the woman had anything to do with the watercraft, which had been reported stolen from a local business.

Gallichant said Jackson County, Miss., Sheriff’s Department officers as well as Mobile authorities began looking for the man in a wooded area Sunday night.

He said a police officer tried to pull over the pickup truck for a routine traffic stop about 8:15 p.m. Sunday near Zeigler Boulevard and Schillinger Road.

Gallichant said the man refused to stop, initiating a pursuit that eventually involved Mobile County Sheriff’s deputies.

He said authorities followed the driver on Tanner Williams Road until he bailed from the truck near State Line Road, which is just east of the Mississippi line.
